    Another Mac OS 8 Review

Henry Bortman, MacUser's technical director, just wrote a very thorough Mac OS 8 review. In this article, Bortman wrote: "Mac OS 8 is what we've been waiting for. We were lukewarm about 7.6, but we have no doubt about the value of 8.0. Considering the upgrade's expected street price of $99 (with a $30 mail-in rebate for registered owners of Mac OS 7.6), our recommendation is simple: Do it."

WebObjects Now Enables Java- and CORBA-based Solutions

Apple's WebObjects application development software is now able to help enterprises deliver new solutions based on Java and CORBA, as well as HTML and HTTP. Through IIOP capability bundled with market-leading web browser Netscape Communicator, customers are able to use WebObjects and the Netscape browser to create interactive and open network applications quickly and easily.

WebObjects, an award-winning open development platform for the web, provides an application server, pre-built application components, and rapid application assembly tools that let customers bring enterprise solutions on-line quickly. By providing an open middle-tier application server that provides flexible support for multiple standards, WebObjects delivers more interactivity to end users and more flexibility to developers.

According to Apple's senior product line manager for WebObjects, David Kay, the new use of Java and CORBA illustrates the flexibility of the WebObjects product, as Netscape Communicator and its IIOP plug-in from Visigenics Inc. were not part of the web landscape when WebObjects was designed. "The standards-based, open-systems approach taken by Apple and the former NeXT Software team in developing WebObjects enables customers to adopt new technology in 'Web Time'," said Kay. "This is just one of the ways that we are making it easier for developers to create dynamic web applications with WebObjects."

Mac OS Runtime for Java 1.5 is Now Available

Apple just announced the availability of Mac OS Runtime for Java 1.5 (MRJ 1.5), an implementation of Sun Microsystems's Java virtual machine (VM) and run-time environment for Macintosh and Mac OS-compatible systems. MRJ 1.5, which features a set of shared libraries and other system software files, follows on the success of Apple's MRJ 1.0 and offers improved functionality. With the addition of a PowerPC "just-in-time compiler" (JITc) and numerous graphics subsystem performance enhancements, MRJ 1.5 has the capability to offer a 10x improvement in performance over previous versions of MRJ as measured by industry standard CaffeineMarks.

Additional functionality in MRJ 1.5 includes the new MRJ Toolkit, which allows developers to add Mac OS-specific functionality to Java applications. MRJ Toolkit stubs are written in 100 percent Pure Java to allow applications taking advantage of the MRJ Toolkit to automatically run on non-Mac OS platforms without modification. By taking advantage of MRJ Toolkit, developers can easily extend their applications to provide excellent support for unique Mac OS advantages without sacrificing 100 percent Pure Java compatibility.

Mac OS Runtime for Java and the corresponding SDK are available for no charge when you download it from this web site:

Apple Sales In Europe and Japan Show Healthy Growth

Reading "between the lines" of last week's quarterly earnings report, there were two bright spots in Apple's sales outlook--both European and Japanese product sales showed strong growth. According to Diego Piacentini, Apple Europe's vice president of sales and general manager, "Apple Europe has trimmed back most of its excess fat. None of the staff cuts have come from sales, however. In fact, Apple has increased its European sales force by 5 to 6 percent."

Joanne Taaffe of the IDG News Service, Paris Bureau, reported that Apple's third-quarter unit sales grew:

    • by 5 percent in the United Kingdom
    • by 10 percent in Switzerland
    • by 20 percent in Spain
    • by 25 percent in Italy
Apple Recon, a third-party site that presents stock trading-related news about Apple, wrote that Apple's third-quarter sales grew by 70 percent in Japan, due mostly to strong PowerBook 2400 and 3400 sales.

No Winners in the Vanhacking Challenge

After six weeks, the Vanhacking Challenge contest has no winner, because no one was able to break into VirTech Communications' Macintosh Internet server. From June 1 to July 15, 1997, VirTech Communications challenged the global "hacker" community to bypass the security of its Macintosh World Wide Web server. Similar contests have been conducted in the United States and Sweden, but VirTech's challenge was unique in that it has addressed popular Internet security issues. By launching the challenge, VirTech wanted to overturn the notion that the Internet is vulnerable to credit card number snatching. Any hacker who was able to attack the server--that is, break into it, snatch the credit card number, and change the phrase found on the page--would have won a hefty Canadian C$ 10,000 prize (or an equivalent U.S.$ 7,500 prize). The Macintosh server that VirTech employed was in no way modified; VirTech didn't install security software to strengthen its firewall and protect the server. The server was running Apple Internet Server Solution 2.0, an Internet network suite of products that consists of StarNine Technologies' WebStar 1.3.2 server software, and several prepackaged CGIs (common gateway interfaces).

The Vanhacking site generated 283,479 hits since its launch on June 1, 1997, and analysis of the site log shows that there have been approximately 127,456 serious attempts to break into the server.

"This proves that the Macintosh server is definitely one of the most secure servers on the planet," commented Frans Susilo, VirTech's Director of Operations.

To share the benefits and findings of the Vanhacking Challenge outcome, VirTech will place a summary of the server preparation, the system configuration, and the events logs from the contest at the Vanhacking site:

Apple Retains Executive Search Firm in Its Search for a New CEO

Apple just announced that its Board of Directors has retained Heidrick & Struggles, a global executive search firm specializing in CEO assignments, to assist it in its search for a new CEO.

Heidrick & Struggles will work closely with the search committee established by the board. Based upon the profile defined by this search committee, the firm will seek a world-class technology industry executive, both a strong leader and a hands-on manager, with a successful sales and marketing background, an established reputation and knowledge of the industry, and the ability to create, execute, and inspire.

The global search will be led by John T. Thompson, vice chairman of Heidrick & Struggles, which has successfully recruited executives such as Lou Gerstner at IBM, George Fisher at Eastman Kodak, Ray Lane at Oracle, and Mort Topfer at Dell. Though the board and the firm cannot commit to a specific time frame, such a search is typically expected to take approximately 90 days.

Feature Film Created Using Power Macs

Apple Power Macintosh computers may sit on desktops, but they chart the surfaces of unseen fantasy planets in Planetary Traveler, a remarkable new film produced entirely on the computer platform that started the desktop revolution. Produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning producer/director Jan C. Nickman, the film represents the work of seven of the world's most talented digital artists who have weaved a world--or worlds--of vivid imagination, untold realism, and stunning visual intensity.

Ten Power Macintosh computers and Power Computing compatibles running between 120 and 180 MHz with at least 32 MB each and one or two GB-plus hard drives constituted the Planetary Traveler "render farm," which Nickman, L'Ongnion and artist Rob Sonner set up in Glendale and Carpinteria, California. At 20 minutes of render time per frame, the project took a total of 50,000 hours to render. Production sponsors included Streamlogic and Truevision; Streamlogic provided disc arrays and Truevision provided the boards to output the project to video, where it was matched with Paul Haslinger's score.

The world premiere of Planetary Traveler took place at the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) gathering in Las Vegas this July. A home video distribution deal has been confirmed with WinStar Home Entertainment (a division of Fox Lorber); the company holds global broadcast, video, and DVD rights to the title. Slated for a September 26 release, the suggested retail price for the 40-minute film is around U.S.$ 20; Fox Lorber will release the title simultaneously on DVD.
